You probably already know I’m a big fan of the innovative and effective planet-spanning network of female journalists called Global Press, and their publication Global Press Journal. If not, see our past conversations below.
On Thursday morning at 9 a.m. U.S. Eastern time, join me LIVE with editor-in-chief Krista Karch and reporter Nakisanze Segawa (in Kampala, Uganda) to get an update on how the Trump/Musk assault on the U.S. Agency for International Development is playing out in communities where American development assistance has been abruptly cut off. Just paste this post link in your calendar for that day/hour and join us live on LinkedIn, Facebook or YouTube.
Before the show I hope you can read some of the reporting Segawa and other Global Press journalists have been doing. Here’s the link to their continuing series covering this crisis.
Just in case you might have missed it, also please read my former colleague Nick Kristof’s invaluable column: The World’s Richest Men Take On the World’s Poorest Children.
Amid the current debate over USAID, it’s important to note that Global Press, unlike some other journalism projects in the world’s pooer regions, takes no government money, its founder and CEO, Cristi Hegranes, told me. (For full disclosure, last year I was paid a small per-diem and my expenses were covered by the State Department when I did a three-city tour in Brazil to brainstorm with environment-focused journalists.)
In case you missed it, here’s my recent post on how the USAID cuts are affecting journalism in countries that need help most:
Before Trump Takes it Down, Here's USAID Explaining Its Support of Journalism in Repressive Places
Amid Trump and Musk’s “everything everywhere all at once” blitz of assaults, here’s one snapshot on the impact on America’s efforts, mostly through the now-frozen U.S. Agency for International Development, to foster effective journalism in repressive countries. Since the weekend, X has been thick with echoes of this Musk post.
