While spending time in the NC mountains, it's impossible to ignore the impact of hydro power there, which has a history extending back to WWII.

TVA built many dams, both for flood control and power generation. Before then, smaller power firms built dams for cheap power generation in this rural corner of the state.

Here, hydro power was a godsend that raised living standards and supplied industrial consumers who were essential to the war effort.

In NC of course elevation changes are more modest, and you don't have the glacial melting issues that make projects in Nepal and India so unpredictable.

I mean what a lesson. The prospect of cheap, renewable power production has huge downsides when located in unstable locations. Not just a no-brainer godsend.

Thanks for staying on top of this story, Andy, and for the depth of reporting behind it. I traveled Nepal and Tibet a lifetime ago, but while aware that melting and flooding were going to intensify, I hadn't paid attention to how much hydro was being installed and how fragile that infrastructure would be.

Side note: I went overland from Nepal into Tibet, which was quite a trip. Flying back to Kathmandu a month later, we flew over Everest a day before the whole Into Thin Air disaster took place.

The Himalaya are a hard place for people to thrive. And we keep upping the stakes.
