A Close Look at Transportation Risk Under Trump
LIVE: Tuesday, March 4, 10 a.m., join me with three longtime analysts of planes, automobiles, rockets and the rest.
As President Trump’s second term continues its shock and awe phase, join my Tuesday morning pop-up Sustain What webcast to explore impacts on transportation policy and safety with three seasoned journalists on the mobility beat – James Fallows, David Kerley and Jim Motavalli. We’ll explore everything from Trump’s war on EVs to the dangers posed by deep Federal Aviation Administration personnel cuts.

James Fallows, a much-lauded, wide-ranging journalist and author, has deep expertise in aviation safety and policy and is an instrument-rated pilot. He’s been an indispensible guide to what makes commercial aviation profoundly safe, why it’s been getting less safe in recent years, and why President Trump’s recent moves are raising odds of tragedy. His latest Substack post is essential, if grim reading. The subhead says heaps: “Some of the assault on governing institutions comes from ignorance and zeal. Some is just corrupt. Together this will lead to deaths. Here's why.”
David Kerley, a longtime ABC News journalist, now writes the Full Throttle newsletter here on Substack on transportation advances and issues. As I wrote a few days ago, Kerley has been digging in on what could end up being a significant rift between Trump and his chief budget hatchet man, Elon Musk, over electric vehicle policy:
Jim Motavalli has been on the green and automobile beats for more than four decades, writing for Autoweek, Barron’s, The New York Times, Car Talk (remember Car Talk?) and more. He was recently interviewed on the Living on Earth radio show for a segment titled EVs in the Trump Era. And he’s been on the radio since the early 1970s, mostly at WPKN in Connecticut, exploring everything from jazz to renewable energy. Explore his Plugging In show and podcast.
